Characteristics

Location
Tono, Iwate, Japan—a Japanese treasure preserving authentic traditions and home to legends and myths passed down for centuries. Tono has over fifty local groups specializing in dances and folk rituals such as Shishiodori, Kagura, Sansa, or Nanbubayashi, some recognized as intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO. Additionally, Tono features Buddhist temples, Shinto shrines, sacred mountains, and magical forests that are well worth a visit. Tono is also renowned as the birthplace of Japanese folk tales: stories orally transmitted for centuries until they were compiled and edited by the father of Japanese ethnology, Kunio Yanagita, under the title “Legends of Tono.”
